Newbie Marketers - Beware the Make Money Online Hype
Forget all those pictures of checks made out for more than you make in a decade or multi colored graphs displaying dollar amounts larger than your monthly income. I’m not saying that this can’t become an eventual reality for you (and me too ;)), but I guarantee you a newbie marketer just starting out is not going to see these figures right away. Right now the newbie marketer is more pauper then prince. What these figures fail to show you is what is really behind them.
How much money was spent on advertising?
How many products are being promoted?
How much income is from huge email lists?
How many successful campaigns are being promoted?
How many campaigns failed to get to this point?
Lets not forget the intangibles. No matter how well meaning the book there are often little things left out that the experienced marketer takes for granted. Have you ever tried to teach something you know really well and are frustrated when you pupil just doesn’t seem to get it? More then likely your leaving out little things you do instinctively that make the task seem easy.
For example I tried one technique where the author stated they averaged 20 clicks for each answer they gave in a forum. I followed the example exactly and received less then one click per answer. I had taken the time to give quality answers and was even recognized for my answers. Was the author being deliberately deceptive? I don’t think so. He may have left out some factors that would have increased my chance of success.
Maybe I need to establish a reputation first.
Maybe I wasn’t answering questions in the right niche.
Maybe I didn’t place my links in the proper place.
In the end a lot of newbie marketers drop out usually having lost a lot more then they’ve earned. The hype and promise of quick riches never lives up to the reality. Even the best Internet Marketer has failed far more times than they have succeeded. But you can’t hype failure.
“Take a look at these checks for $3 - $20! They only cost me $200 in materials and advertising! Buy My Book!!”
How do you avoid the hype and increase you chance of success?
You need ongoing support and a community of marketers ranging from newbie marketers to experienced marketers.
You need 1 quality book for whatever marketing strategy you want to try whether that is Adwords advertising, Adsense, Opt-in Email Lists, Article Marketing, EBay and so on.
You need to set a budget for each month and stick to it. You will probably lose money for the first while so look into techniques that are free or very low cost to implement.
