Online Niche Marketing - What Comes in the Middle?

The first struggle with any new online marketing effort is getting traffic. The final focus is on getting that traffic to buy from you.

But what comes in the middle?

A key piece of the middle part is to get e-mail subscribers. The reason is that most websites have a conversion rate less than 1%. The last reference I have seen is that the figure is about 0.86%. That means that if your website is to get people to call you then less than 1% of your website visitors do. If your website is designed to get people to purchase then less than 1% do. If you have a website that performs at this level then you can consider yourself in good company. However, many sites are clearly below this with a significant number hovering at just above 0.00%.

The one thing that most sites just do not do is to add a piece in the middle that enables their site to collect e-mail addresses from people that have opted in (agreed to receive e-mails from you). On average, the numbers suggests, you will be able to get between 10% and 20% of your website visitors to opt into your list. This number could be higher with a niche-focused website.
This should not be a surprise if you offer an incentive (something of value) for their e-mail address. Then once you have the opt-in e-mail list a well designed autoresponder campaign can achieve a 25% conversion rate. This means a 2.5% to 5% conversion rate when you count all your website traffic. This is more than 2.5 times to 5 times higher than if you did not have a method to collect subscribers. should you invest the time and effort into this? Of course!

Perhaps that will be a surprise to some of you.

The simple math tells you five conversions are better than one but that’s not the only important part of having a list.

Building a list is one of the most important things you can do to grow your business online and protect that very same business. If you are selling a product, selling someone else’s products as an affiliate, providing a service, creating multiple niche marketing sites (with multiple niche lists), or perhaps even blogging. . . it really doesn’t matter . . . building a list is absolutely critical to your success.

Think back to last summer for a moment, when Google changed the rules on you.

If all of your traffic came from Adwords, then you lost all of your traffic and all of your sales. If you had no list (or lists), you were struggling or maybe out of business.

But if you DID have a list or multiple lists then you had an asset and an advantage over your competitors that did not have a list. You had the ability to continue to market to that list while you worked on your Adwords strategy to get your traffic back. (Hopefully you learned your lesson and are using other traffic sources by now.) You should know, though, that a list is security, because no matter what happens to the rest of your traffic, you’ve still got your list, and the people on the list respect you and have agreed to hear from you and to learn from your advice. They expect to hear from you.

Recently I was talking with a business colleague that has spent the last couple of years building an opt-in list and now has over 5,000 subscribers. He feels that his list is one of his most valuable business assets. When he has a new product his list gets notified first. He often gives the people on the list special deals as a way to say thank you for being a subscriber. He enjoys educating and writing to his list.

Learn ways to add to the part in the middle. Create websites that build your subscriber list. Become more effective and more efficient. I would argue that this should be a top if not the top priority.
